Meet the NEFCC Team

Chairman & Instructor: Neil Lobban
I am a passionate game fisherman and educator, I love passing on my knowledge to others and sharing their enjoyment and success. I have over 30 years experience in game fishing for salmon, trout, sea trout and grayling. I’m a qualified Speycasting and single-handed casting instructor AAPGAI (Advanced in both disciplines) and UKCC Level 2 Game Angling Coach and Coach Educator.

Secretary & Coach: Adam Brougham
I have had a real passion for all types of angling which started from my dad taking me as soon as I was old enough to walk and hold a rod. My real passion lies with river trout fishing where I grew up learning the tricks of the trade on the River Derwent. I have been a member of Axwell Park & Derwent Valley Angling Association for over 20 years and Secretary of the club for the last 15 years. I have fished in numerous places around the world and love to catch different species trying new methods. I am a Level 2 qualified game angling coach and I love to introduce new people to the joys of angling, particularly with a fly rod!

Treasurer & Coach: Ben Thompson
I’ve been salmon fishing for over 25 years and spend as much time on the river as possible. I grew up fishing the Coquet but now spend most of my time on the Tyne system. I enjoy regular trips to fish Scotland’s big four, Spey, Dee, Tay and Tweed and occasional visits to other rivers.  I thoroughly enjoy helping others and passing on knowledge to those who are keen to learn.

Coach: Ross Middleton
With a degree in marine biology, I’ve been teaching for 35 years, 16 of them as a UKCC level 2 coach in all angling disciplines though game tuition and guiding are firm favourites. I love a light line, top-of-the-water approach whenever possible, lending itself well to summer salmon and sea trout forays with a switch, or brownies and grayling on imitative dries.

Coach: Chris Presland
I have been fishing most of my life, and it’s always been a real passion for me. I grew up fishing the length and breadth of South Africa and surrounding countries, exploring wild remote rivers and tropical saltwater destinations. I’ve been fortunate enough to have visited 14 countries across 4 continents seeking out fish of all shapes and sizes. I enjoy learning new skills from fellow anglers, while also passing on some of my own knowledge. I’m an avid fly-tyer and learner of fly-casting, and always looking for new spices to deceive on the fly!

Instructor: John Little
I have been a passionate fisher all of my life, but when I was 20 I caught my first salmon and it changed my life completely. I have fished all over Europe including Russia, Norway and Iceland and most of the Scottish rivers large and small. My home river is the Wear where I love night fishing for sea trout but I have fished the best of the Tyne for nearly 30 years. I have always been interested in casting and I qualified as an AAPGAI Advanced Instructor in 2008. I enjoy teaching not only the technicalities of fly casting but also how to read the river in all its moods. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than teaching someone to cast and then to see them catch their first salmon!

Instructor: Barry Mitchell
I’m Barry Mitchell, I am an all-round game angler and instructor. I am a member of the Fly Fishers International and under their Casting Instructor Certification Programme hold the ‘two handed casting Instructor’ certificate, I am also a member of GAIA and have instructors’ certificates in both double and single casting. I am pleased to be involved with the North East casting club both as an Instructor and a member involved in fishing and social events.

Level 1 Support Coach: Heidi Williams
Early experiments with a bent pin and apple as bait were a disappointment, as was the complete absence of fishing/angling badges in Brownies or Guides. Despite this my interest remained keen and moving to Northumberland close to the best salmon river in England led to my finding the North East Fly Casting Club. Under their patient and welcoming tuition I learned to fish properly and have recently qualified as a Level 1 angling support coach. I am keen to encourage others to share this fascinating pastime, especially girls and ladies who like me have the desire to try fishing but no idea where to start!

Level 1 Support Coach: Zoila Brozas
My name is Zoila Brozas I started fishing in 2018. I caught my first trout and salmon on a fly and since then I have been hooked! Fishing provides me with the motivation to be outdoors and active and I feel the energy and excitement when I fish. It takes me to some incredible places and continues to provide me with memorable experiences. I’m now  a qualified Level 1 Assistant Coach and would love to be involve in helping and encouraging more people to try fishing.

Level 1 Support Coach: Cathy Muse
Looking for a new challenge when I retired, I joined a group of like-minded ladies some 12 years ago and started fishing on still water. Once I had experienced fly-fishing on the Tyne, however, I was hooked! My long-held dream of catching a salmon materialised 4 years later and I have been building on that experience since then. On family holidays, I introduced my husband and our children to the pleasures of sea fishing and my grandchildren can’t wait to pick up a rod and come fishing with me! The NEFCC offered me the opportunity to improve skills, meet other members at drop-in sessions and days out as well as gain confidence in all aspects of fly-fishing. As a newly qualified Level 1 Coach, I look forward to giving something back!

Level 1 Support Coach: Sarah Iveson
I have fly fished for salmon and sea trout on the River Tyne for 10 years.  Fishing is more to me than just catching a fish.  It is an opportunity to spend time outdoors, in beautiful surroundings and to learn the art of fly fishing.  I hold a 1st4sport Level 1 Award in Assistant Coaching.

Level 1 Support Coach: Malcolm Patterson
I was introduced to Game fishing for trout on the Coquet as a young boy by my grandad. Upon retirement in my early 50’s I decided to take up salmon fishing but needed guidance. I joined NEFCC and underwent my Spey casting course and gained knowledge from the coaching sessions and club trips. I am now an addicted salmon angler, fishing club waters on the Tyne system and enjoy regular trips to Scottish rivers and further afield. I have fished all over the world for different species and wherever I travel, a rod is always packed. Wishing to give something back to this great sport I have recently qualified as a Level 1 Angling Coach and look forward to progressing to Level 2.
